1126 Residence
Golden Valley, Minnesota

Project Goal:
Design of an addition and remodeling to a 1975 house previously designed and added to by another architect. The owners wished to redesign the entry courtyard to eliminate the 'parking lot' feeling. In the interior, the owners wished to expand the second floor, kitchen, breakfast room, and dining room.

Outcome:
The entry design concept uses three series of three elements to bring unity to the entry helping to shift the focal point to the front door. By adding space on top of the existing roof, a telescoping effect is created. The tallest mass is a 13 foot high, skylit exercise room. The middle height mass is a small computer room. Both use a mirrored wall to double their apparent size. The kitchen/breakfastroom/dining expansion twists the interior orientation of these spaces to take better advantage of the existing creek view and creates intimate corners in the dining room which programmatically had to seat five on a daily basis but seat 20 for frequent formal affairs.
