Problem:
Like many split level designs, this house had an awkward relationship with its site. The existing deck felt detached from the yard and the stair was steep. Most irritating, the main way in from the detached garage was through a sliding glass door directly into the dining room with no place for coats or shoes.

Solution:
A new two tier deck places the entertaining area closer to the yard and the entry/bar-b-que deck at the upper level. By removing the sliding glass door and bumping the wall out 18" under the existing overhang, a small interior mudroom vestibule was created. The old sliding door was replaced with a more energy efficient swinging door.
